Free „Bike-Check“ for Students

ÖH IMC Krems and Radlobby Krems offered a repair service at Campus Krems – together they keep fighting for the opening of the Alauntalstraße

In order to ensure the bike mobility of the students of the IMC FH Krems, the student union (ÖH IMC Krems) again offered a free repair service in October. “A broken bicycle can be a major limitation in everyday life for students, because many of them use it every day in Krems”, says Stephanie Pfann, organizer at the ÖH IMC Krems. Last but not least, the numerous participants showed how important the bike is for students.

Alauntalstraße is still not fully open
The campaign traditionally takes place in cooperation with the Krems Radlobby, with which the students also work on content, for example with regard to opening the one-way in Alauntalstrasse to cyclists. “We have been calling for this route to be fully opened since 2016, because it connects the two locations of the IMC Krems University of Applied Sciences,” explains Megan McFadden, Chairwoman of the ÖH IMC Krems, who finally wants an implementation in the interests of the thousands of students affected in Krems.

Initiative request did not make it into the municipal council
In June 2017, the students even submitted 384 signatures to the city of Krems on this matter, actually initiating an initiative application to the local council. Unfortunately, however, this was never presented to the local council, because the magistrate believed at the time that the content of the initiative proposal did not fall within the competence of the city senate or the local council. Two years later, the students were still able to celebrate their first partial success when the Alauntalstrasse was at least partially opened. “The full opening continues to fail because of the parking lots that would be lost, because these are still more important to politics in Krems than bicycle mobility,” concluded McFadden.
